I wrote these “Three Pieces” for my friend and fellow hornist Ashley Mueller, who requested that I write her a solo which paid homage to some of the great pieces of solo repertoire for the horn. This was the basis for the first movement, which takes a simple fanfare figure and folds in altered quotations from many solos and composers from Schumann to Strauss. The second movement takes full advantage of the lyrical, romantic capabilities of the horn, and serves as a contrast to the virtuosic finale, which takes the form of a lively and whimsical scherzo.
