Written for stereo fixed media, Social Creatures is a continuation of recent experiments with using longer field recordings to inform structural elements of acoustic composition. Nearly all source material in Social Creatures comes from recordings taken of domesticated pigs and natural landscapes found in central Wisconsin. The only exception comes in the form of several mechanical drones which emerge partway through the piece, which are taken from a series of industrial fans and air conditioning units and contrast the more stochastic, organic sounds of the pig recordings. Social Creatures seeks to guide the listener through a gradual transition from raw, unprocessed animal sounds into a final, highly digital landscape, while still maintaining an identifiable connection to the animalistic origins of the sonic materials.
