DURATION: 3 minutes 15 seconds
The sounds of “Colloquy” seek to capture the phenomenon of conversation as they interact with, respond to, or ignore each other. As the piece unfolds, different conversations can be heard, ranging from simple dialogue to the clamor of overlapping voices. This piece is constructed out of two main sound types, which consist of pitched, electronic sounds initially and more organic, unpitched sounds in the secondary section. These sounds, all of which were derived from recordings of a French Horn, eventually join in an uproar before concluding in dialogue with each other.
This piece was composed as a foil to “Pareidolia,” and was designed to provide an entirely different listening experience from the same source material. Whereas “Pareidolia” is a lengthy, dense composition which relies on mechanical, unpitched sound types, “Colloquy” uses simpler processing techniques to create a short, whimsical ternary form which is grounded in a stable tonic pitch.
