DURATION: Approximately 5 minutes

Written for Pierrot ensemble, “Maelstrom” seeks to capture a sense of unrelenting turmoil and chaos as it unfolds, akin to the massive whirlpools spoken of in nautical tales. Although a brief period of respite emerges in the middle of the work, the underlying tension of the piece continues to build as each voice clamors to be heard above the ensemble. Conflicting rhythmic figures and overlapping melodic entrances continue to create tension, building toward an energetic conclusion which echoes the tumult of the opening.

Maelstrom was commissioned by the 2022 Vienna Summer Music Festival. It was performed at the festival by PHACE.
