DURATION: Approximately 8 minutes
Written for a mixed quintet, this set of four miniature movements was inspired by an exhibition at the Pallant House Gallery in Chichester, England. This exhibition, titled “Masterpieces in Miniature,” was installed in 2021 and featured a model art gallery with curated rooms displaying miniature artworks from notable British artists. This piece examines just one room of the model gallery, and the four miniature paintings contained within.
Each of the four movements was inspired by a separate painting, which can be found on the following page and are as follows:
I. The Little Lover by George Shaw (2020, enamel on cardboard)
II. Disappearance at Sea by Tacita Dean (2020, white charcoal pencil and blackboard paint on hardboard)
III. Death of David Kelly by Dexter Dalwood (2020, oil and acrylic on card)
IV. The Naked Eye by Glenn Brown (2021, India ink, acrylic, and oil paint on drafting film)
Four Pieces for Pallant House was commissioned by the Royal Academy of Music and premiered at the Pallant House Gallery in Chichester, England in April 2024
