DURATION: Approximately 4 minutes
The musical material of CREDO is directly derived from the four-part SATB writing found near the beginning of the finale of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony. Inspired by the slightly off-kilter feel of Beethoven’s contrapuntal writing, CREDO reharmonizes and recontextualizes this sprightly, upbeat passage into a plodding, dirge-like structure which slowly unravels as it progresses.
CREDO was commissioned by Pernille Faye and Nigel Wilkinson as part of the “Beethoven: New Perspectives” project at the Norden Farm Center for the Arts, where it was premiered by Mengyang Pan.
