The musical material from “CREDO” is directly derived from the 4-part SATB writing found near the beginning of the fourth movement of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony, following the first entrance of the “Ode” (“Freude trinken alle Wesen”). Inspired by the slightly off-beat feel of Beethoven’s contrapuntal writing, “CREDO” reharmonizes and recontextualizes this sprightly, upbeat material into a plodding, dirge-like structure which slowly unravels as it progresses.

CREDO was commissioned by Pernille Faye and Nigel Wilkinson as part of the “Beethoven: New Perspectives” project at the Norden Farm Center for the Arts, where it was premiered by Mengyan Pang.
